ItaQuando mi imbatto in storie che mi colpiscono, come questa che mi accingo a raccontare, mi viene un gran desiderio di rappresentarle fotograficamente.
Il soggetto scelto è Christiana Edmunds, una donna che, suo malgrado, è diventata famosa come "Chocolate cream killer", ossia la "Killer dei cioccolatini alla crema".
Il fatto si svolge a Brighton, una cittadina nei dintorni di Londra, in epoca vittoriana, verso la fine degli anni 1860.
Christiana, in età ormai avanzata, si innamora follemente del medico locale, tale Charles Beard; purtroppo, però, quest'ultimo è sposato con prole. I due iniziano una fervida corrispondenza epistolare, ma lei - ossessionata dall'attrazione - vuole spingersi oltre ed arriva a desiderare la morte della moglie del medico.
La donna, dopo vari appostamenti davanti all'abitazione dei signori Beard, fingendosi malata e bisognosa di una visita medica, riesce ad entrare e a conquistare la simpatia della moglie di Charles e ad offrirle dei cioccolatini farciti con stricnina ed arsenico.
La signora Beard si salva miracolosamente dall'attentato di Christiana. Il medico, pur sospettando il vero motivo del grave malore, non denuncia Christina ma, tuttavia, tronca ogni rapporto con lei.
Al fine di riconquistare la fiducia del medico, e di allontanare da lei i sospetti, Christiana escogita un piano diabolico: chiede ad un ragazzo di acquistare alcuni cioccolatini in una famosa pasticceria del paese e, con una siringa, li riempie di veleno per poi restituirli alla pasticceria allegando un bigliettino con una banale scusa e ottenendo così la loro sostituzione.
Il proprietario del negozio, ignaro di aver ritirato dei cioccolatini avvelenati, li rimette tranquillamente in vendita. Ciò provoca malesseri e intossicazioni alla gente del paese e il pasticcere viene indagato e inizialmente indiziato per quanto accaduto.
La polizia, approfondisce gli accertamenti e, nel frattempo si verifica, a causa dei cioccolatini avvelenati, addirittura la morte di Sidney Baker, un bambino di soli 4 anni. Un farmacista racconta alla polizia che si ricorda di aver venduto del veleno alla Signora Christiana Edmunds, la quale si era giustificata per l'acquisto dichiarando che doveva eliminare un nido di topi; inoltre, il dottor Beard provvede a consegnare agli inquirenti le lettere d'amore tra lui e Christiana.
Una perizia calligrafica riesce a provare che il bigliettino utilizzato per restituire i cioccolatini e le lettere d'amore scritte da Christiana sono opera della stessa mano: per la Edmunds è la fine; riesce, grazie alla malattia mentale che le viene diagnosticata (schizofrenia) ad evitare la pena di morte, tuttavia viene condannata all’ergastolo e rinchiusa nel manicomio criminale del Broadmoor Hospital, dove passa il resto della sua vita (raggiungerà l'età di novant'anni).

Christiana, at an advanced age, falls madly in love with the local doctor, a certain Charles Beard; unfortunately, however, the latter is married with offspring. The two begin a fervent correspondence, but she - obsessed with attraction - wants to go further and comes to wish the doctor's wife to die.
The woman, after several stalking in front of the Beard house, pretending to be ill and in need of a medical examination, manages to enter and win the sympathy of Charles's wife and offer her chocolates filled with strychnine and arsenic.
Mrs Beard is miraculously saved from Christiana's attack. The doctor, while suspecting the real reason for the serious illness, does not report Christina but, nevertheless, cuts off all relations with her.
In order to regain the doctor's trust, and to remove suspicions from her, Christiana devises a diabolical plan: she asks a boy to buy some chocolates in a famous pastry shop in the country and, with a syringe, fills them with poison and then returns them. to the pastry shop by attaching a note with a trivial excuse and thus obtaining their replacement.
The owner of the shop, unaware that he has withdrawn some poisoned chocolates, quietly puts them back on sale. This causes unease and intoxication to the people of the town and the pastry chef is investigated and initially indicted for what happened.
The police deepen the investigations and, in the meantime, the death of Sidney Baker, a 4-year-old child, occurs due to the poisoned chocolates. A pharmacist tells police that he remembers selling poison to Mrs. Christiana Edmunds, who justified the purchase by declaring that she had to eliminate a nest of rats; in addition, Dr. Beard delivers the love letters between him and Christiana to the investigators.
A calligraphic appraisal succeeds in proving that the note used to return the chocolates and the love letters written by Christiana are the work of the same hand: for Edmunds it is the end; manages, thanks to the mental illness that is diagnosed (schizophrenia) to avoid the death penalty, however she is sentenced to life imprisonment and locked up in the criminal asylum of Broadmoor Hospital, where she spends the rest of her life (she will reach the age of ninety years).
