Un confine labile separa la realtà dal sogno. Una volta varcato quel limes poroso e superato il primo stordimento che scuote la ragione, ci accorgiamo d’aver messo piede in un territorio dove le certezze sono annullate, dove quello che amiamo lo ritroviamo intatto tra le scorie: la fotografia “inventa” la realtà quando questa non risponde alle nostre necessità descrittive. Dal visibile all’invisibile o, meglio, dall’incanto del visibile alla sua trasposizione onirica, e in questo passaggio ogni cosa che conosciamo assume un nuovo volto. Si direbbe che l’intero lavoro di Catia Mencacci – e non sbaglieremmo a pensarlo – si articoli giusto in questa direzione, esponendo cioè al versante del reale la potenza immaginifica di impressioni lasciate all’arbitrio della fantasia. Ma è bene dire che non c’è nessuna anarchia: le serie di Catia Mencacci sono governate da una mano sicura e le immagini, che hanno la potenza espressiva di poesie, obbediscono al progetto dell’autrice. Docilmente. E noi restiamo rapiti. La serie da me proposta “From Other Lands”, una tra le tante e tutte incantatrici, è frutto di un arbitrio che, spero, incontri il piacere di chi osserva. Se, come me, avete ritrovato tra le immagini un inalterato senso di compattezza, la solidità del verso d’una poesia che il tempo non ha cancellato dalla nostra memoria e l’incanto di condividere un viaggio in territori inesplorati, allora rotta la naturale diffidenza, mi darete ragione. Qui, tra le fotografie di “from Other Lands” tuona il respiro allusivo della metafora, risuonano gli echi lontani di un racconto senza fine ripetuto per il nostro piacere. Ecco che tutto è com’è, ma alla controluce del sogno tutto è nuovo diverso, persino più affascinante perché, come si è detto prima, quando la fotografia non si riconosce nella presa della realtà è capace di inventarsene un’altra; e quando si libera la fantasia l’unico freno al fantastico è rappresentato solo dalla nostra fantasia. Le immagini di “From Other Lands” (il titolo introduce al cuore del tema) ci giungono da un luogo ove tutto è possibile e tutto obbedisce alle visioni dell’autrice, da quell’altrove in cui ogni visione ha il sapore della realtà; anzi, è il sogno che diventa realtà, ed è con questa delicata invenzione che Catia Mencacci ci invita a confrontarci nel tentativo di ricomporre i frammenti delle nostre anime. Le fotografie sono frammenti posti al vaglio dell’interpretazione: spesso sono dettagli, scaglie di realtà, schegge che superano la filigrana delle nostre certezze e si conficcano, per rimanerci, nell’immaginario della nostra consapevolezza. Ma sopra ogni cosa aleggia il respiro poetico – una cifra molto ben frequentata dall’autrice – e che ci accompagna lungo la visione, insieme al desiderio di uscire dallo specifico fotografico per dare luogo al desiderio letterario che anima la serie. “From Other Lands” dunque è un lavoro fotografico apprezzabile (e non è il solo, vi consiglio caldamente di dare più di un’occhiata al sito di Catia Mencacci e capirete di cosa sto parlando) non solo negli stretti riferimenti fotografici ma anche nello specifico letterario che trova strada nella proprietà del racconto. Un gran lavoro.

A fleeting border separates reality from dream. Once we cross that porous limes and overcome the first stupor that shakes reason, we realize that we have set foot in a territory where certainties are canceled, where what we love we find intact among the dross: photography "invents" reality when this doesn’t respond to our descriptive needs. From the visible to the invisible or, better, from the enchantment of the visible to its dreamlike transposition, and in this passage everything we know takes on a new face. It would seem that the entire work of Catia Mencacci - and we would not be wrong to think of it - is articulated in this direction, that is, exposing to the side of reality the imaginative power of impressions left to the whim of the imagination. But it is good to say that there’s no anarchy: Catia Mencacci's series are governed by a sure hand and the images, which have the expressive power of poems, obey the author's project. Meekly. And we remain enraptured. The series proposed by me "From Other Lands", one of the many and all enchanting, is the result of an will that, I hope, meets the pleasure of the observer. If, like me, you have found among the images an unaltered sense of compactness, the solidity of the verse of a poem that time has not erased from our memory and the enchantment of sharing a journey into unexplored territories, then the natural distrust is broken, you will agree with me. Here, among the photographs of “from Other Lands” thunders the allusive breath of metaphor, the distant echoes of an endless story repeated for our pleasure resound. Here everything is as it is, but against the light of the dream everything is new and different, even more fascinating because, as we said before, when photography does not recognize itself in the grasp of reality it is capable of inventing another one; and when the imagination is free, the only brake on the fantastic is represented only by our imagination. The images of "From Other Lands" (the title introduces the heart of the theme) come to us from a place where everything is possible and everything obeys the author's visions, from that elsewhere where every vision has the flavor of reality; indeed, it is the dream that becomes reality, and it is with this delicate invention that Catia Mencacci invites us to confront ourselves in an attempt to recompose the fragments of our souls. The photographs are fragments placed under the scrutiny of interpretation: they are often details, flakes of reality, splinters that overcome the filigree of our certainties and stick, to remain there, in the imagination of our awareness. But above all things hovers the poetic breath - a figure very well frequented by the author - and that accompanies us along the vision, together with the desire to leave the specific photographic to give rise to the literary desire that animates the series. "From Other Lands" is therefore an appreciable photographic work (and it is not the only one, I strongly suggest you take a look at Catia Mencacci's site and you will understand what I'm talking about) not only in the close photographic references but also specifically literary that finds its way into the property of the story. A really great work.
